Guilin is one of those places where hotel logic is really route logic in disguise. Travelers think they are choosing a neighborhood, but the main question is simpler: is the trip asking Guilin to be a gateway, or is it secretly asking for Yangshuo?
If this is your first trip through the Guilin region, stay in central Guilin unless you already know the overnight is supposed to be scenic and slow. In that case, stop trying to invent a poetic outer-Guilin hotel and sleep in Yangshuo instead. Hotels near stations only make sense for a late arrival, an early departure, or an unusually compressed itinerary.
Central Guilin is rarely the most romantic map pin, but it is usually the most useful one.

Yangshuo becomes the better sleep-there answer when the region is no longer being used as a clean transit chapter, but as a place to exhale.
If the day on the river is the emotional center of the trip, or if the route wants one softer night before moving on, Yangshuo often carries that better than Guilin does. That does not make Guilin the wrong base. It just means the region has changed jobs.
A station-side or transfer-led hotel can work when timing is awkward. But it should stay a tactical choice, not the whole philosophy of the stop.
