Wuhan
Choose where to stay in Wuhan for a first trip by balancing breakfast access, river-crossing friction, rail timing, and whether the stop should feel easier in Hankou or more symbolic on the Wuchang side.
Wuhan is not hard because it lacks good hotel areas. It is hard because the river tricks people into thinking the whole city can be handled as one undifferentiated center. It cannot. For a first stay, the right base is usually the one that keeps breakfast, evening, and one side of the river in the same daily rhythm.
For most first-time visitors, Hankou is the easiest base. It keeps food, walking, and day-to-day movement from becoming a puzzle. Wuchang is the more symbolic choice, good for travelers who want the city’s more historical silhouette and do not mind a little extra friction. Hotels near stations should be reserved for trips where the timetable is clearly in charge.
Hankou is where Wuhan tends to become legible. Meals are easier, mornings are easier, and the city asks for less interpretation. That matters in a place where one wrong hotel can turn a short stop into a lot of unnecessary crossing and backtracking.
Choose Hankou if:
For many travelers, this is the answer that keeps the trip feeling like Wuhan rather than logistics.
Wuchang can be very good, but it should be chosen with intent. This is the side that carries more symbolism: Yellow Crane Tower, the museum-and-lake layer, a more historic sense of arrival.
Choose Wuchang if:
For the right traveler, this is a richer stay. For the average short first trip, Hankou is still the safer answer.
This is the mistake people make in Wuhan. They see a short stay and assume the hotel should hug a station. Usually that saves less than it promises.

Unless the city is functioning as a near-pure transit stop, you will usually get more from a base that supports food and rhythm than one that merely supports departure.
Wuhan is one of the few cities where breakfast is not a side note. A good Wuhan base is the one from which you can wake up hungry and be eating soon, not the one from which you first have to solve transport.
Choose Hankou if you want the strongest all-round first stay. Choose Wuchang if you want a more symbolic, more specifically “Wuhan” frame and are willing to pay for it in a little friction. Choose a station hotel only when the stop is so short that the rest of the city barely has time to matter.

Usually, a Hankou-side base is the easiest default because it keeps meals, walking, and practical day-to-day movement simpler. A Wuchang-side stay is better when the trip is built around a more symbolic morning and you accept a little more friction.
